The Race Officer
RO, Rob Douglas
Excerpt from a catch up with Rob below.
Geoff-“Hi Rob, thanks for chatting today, I hear that you have been sailing for a while?”
Rob-“yes thats right Geoff, I have been sailing since age 4 and won my first National Championship in Manly Juniors at age 13. I have participated in over 20 international events as a competitor, mostly in Tasars and Lasers but I have sailed a host of OD classes over the years. I am currently campaigning a VX one. Since 2012 I have become more interested in regatta management as a way of giving back to our sport. I belive my racing experience at the international level can add some value as a Race Officer.”
Geoff-“that sounds great Rob, I personally think some of the best Race officers are accomplished sailors themselves, what would be the principles & priorities guide you on the water as an RO”
Rob-“I form the priorities from chats with a class representative, both before & during the event so we can adapt to changing conditions & deliver the best possible event”
Geoff-“Thanks Rob, I am sure that many IC sailors will be relieved to hear that, having experienced delays & running out of energy waiting for the warning signal to sound”
Rob-“Yes I have experienced similar frustrations myself, which is why I think it is important priorities are class driven. Also, being triangular, the courses for the worlds are easily set & visible from the beach so I am sure there will be minimal delays, if any at all”
